Officials Information

Officials Information

Parent volunteers are the backbone of organizing and executing the races our children enjoy. It’s also a good way to stay warm and meet some new friends.

It is strongly encouraged and a requirement at older levels, that all volunteers “inside the fence” at a Nancy Greene, Regional or Provincial race have completed the Alpine Canada Level 1 officials course as a minimum.

SVR has several experienced parent officials who provide mentoring to those new to ski racing or those wishing to develop their skills further for taking on more senior roles. Here is a course breakdown:

Level 1 is a half day course that introduces parent volunteers to the basics of alpine officiating. For example, race organization – roles and responsibilities, basic information on the various disciplines (SL, GS etc.), course set – maintenance and gate judging. Upon completion, you will have a basic understanding of what it takes to set up and successfully run a ski race.

Level 1 course(s) will be held at Snow Valley and the date(s) will be communicated closer to ski season.

Level 2 is a one day course that builds on the Level 1 course and experience gained while volunteering. The purpose is to provide the skills to take on “chief” positions. There are suggested prerequisites as outlined in section 3-4 of the Level 2 manual.

Level 3 is a 2 day course which builds upon the knowledge and experience gained by Level 2 officials. The prerequisites are more extensive, specific and can be found in the Level 3 manual prerequisites section. Interested candidates must currently hold a level 2 certification and need to provide a resume of their on-hill experience which will be reviewed by the course conductor.  You will be advised of acceptance to the course. The level 3 manual contains pre-course work and candidates are encouraged to download and review this material.

Senior Officials Update is a one day seminar for Level 2 and higher officials. It is a requirement that an update be attended every 2 years to retain accreditation.

Non-skiing parents can volunteer for race office/race administration positions.
